Prague 9 is a city district that, through the conversion of formerly industrial sites, holds one of the greatest development potentials in all of Prague. UN Square is today effectively formed by the intersection of the citywide major streets Sokolovská-Kolbenova (radial) and Freyova-Jandova-Vysočanská (tangent), and thanks to its central location within the boundaries of Prague 9 and the presence of City Hall and other government offices, it ranks among the most important public spaces in this part of Prague. However, given its importance and frequency of use, the square exhibits significant shortcomings in the layout and design of its public spaces.

In connection with the investment by the Prague Public Transport Company in the reconstruction of the tram line on Kolbenova and Sokolovská streets, which crosses the square, it was deemed desirable to commission a Concept Study for the improvement of the public space. This study would place the tram line reconstruction within a comprehensive context and a broader framework. The goal is not only to maximize the value and improve the environment of the existing built-up area but also to create conditions to meet the needs of a future increase in the number of users resulting from the planned transformation of former industrial sites in the immediate vicinity.

Therefore, the study focuses not only on the square itself but also on the entire broader network of routes and modes of transportation throughout the city, which as a whole forms the central public space of Vysočany. A key focus has thus been ensuring the continuity and user-friendliness of transfer routes between buses, trams, trains, and the metro, as well as passageways and connections to the recreational areas of the Rokytka valley and the southern slopes beyond the railroad tracks north of the square. The central theme of the study is the creation of a new multifunctional paved area on the square itself, equipped with utility connections to support the hosting of various social events, furnished with municipal street furniture, complemented by an urban water element, and partially shaded by new trees. This type of space is currently lacking in the heart of Vysočany.

The opportunity to create such a space arose from the decision to reroute the current tram loop from the intersection back to its pre-war location around the block that borders the square on the east. The new loop also serves as a tool for revitalizing and reopening the previously neglected streets that encircle the block. This modification would benefit not only public movement and community life but also, for example, emergency response units, which currently face difficulties navigating these confusing and often difficult-to-traverse streets.

The hub—defined by transfer routes between different modes of public transportation and the intersection of various types of urban traffic—forms the central public space of Vysočany. The study proposes upgrading it to a standard commensurate with its current (and future) significance and use, while also adding the previously missing multipurpose paved area of the square itself.
