Vyšehrad is a significant site in Czech history and an important historic complex inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. At the same time, its location makes it one of Prague’s most prominent urban and landscape complexes. To ensure that its maintenance and development can proceed continuously in the future based on a long-term strategy, the management of the Vyšehrad National Cultural Monument selected Rehwaldt Landscape Architects through a competitive bidding process to prepare a Concept Study of public spaces.
The study will address the development of public spaces in terms of their recreational and aesthetic qualities, the design of municipal street furniture, and the information and wayfinding system. Another focus will be the development of the parks in Vyšehrad, with an emphasis on their ecological value and the need to adapt to upcoming climate change—for example, adjustments to plant species composition and methods of rainwater management. A related topic is the potential for reducing light pollution and the design of new ceremonial lighting. The study will not be limited to the area within the Vyšehrad walls but will also focus on modifications to the surrounding slopes, which offer space for the restoration of historically documented orchards and vineyards. It will also explore the potential of currently unused access paths and neglected areas and define the basic parameters for their redevelopment.
